Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes

c 2012 Miss Muffet Laura Goetz

Little Miss Muffet was first published in 1805 in "Songs for the Nursery.”  Some attribute the origin of this nursery rhyme to Dr. Thomas Muffet, an entomologist who wrote the first scientific catalogue of British native insects.  It is believed the poem, Little Miss Muffet, was written for his stepdaughter Patience.

Perhaps Little Miss muffit was the first ”documented” person with arachnophobia.  Like many little girls, I also have a fear of spiders!

I rendered this illustration with Rembrandt soft pastels on canson paper.  For reference, I used a photograph of my niece Delaney, taken at a family wedding.
